As members of an international community, we as Vermonters have a responsibility to do our part to protect others in need. By distancing ourselves from global atrocities in the realm of genocide, we downplay the importance of the stages which precede them. Harassment, stereotyping, bullying, prejudice and human rights violations occur all around us, and on multiple fronts. To truly understand the escalation of ignorance, we must encompass all stages up to and including the ultimate failure of mankind . . . genocide.
To assure that Vermont’s youth are made aware of such atrocities, and that they are given the opportunity and means to combat them, genocide and human rights education must become a part of Vermont public school curricula.
Vermont TAG, along with the University of Vermont STAND (Students Take Action Now Darfur) organization, is spearheading this campaign which aims to pass legislation mandating that all public schools incorporate genocide and human rights education into their curricula.
In Vermont, we work together with students, teachers, and legislators, to develop and implement meaningful, effective and relevant genocide and human rights education. We believe this type of education in the classroom is extremely important in promoting a sense of global awareness, compassion, and action.

What will you tell your children you did as a witness to genocide?
